80's excess

In the Mid 90's when I started in advertising you heard stories about the excess of 80's advertising. Did people really have access coke then? Were juniors brought new cars on their first days? Were ads conceived, presented and then celebrated in restaurants? The work was crap, and some of the more senior fellows do look like they've had indulgent lives, but was this all blown out of proportion? Any dirt would be appreciated.

hi guys. im looking at doing a advertising corse. I live in Dunedin and we have nothing down here to train me. Ive seen a thing i can do as a correspondence @ http://www.stotts.co.nz/ doing

227 Stott Diploma of Advertising & 228 Copywriting & Advert. Design

how many of you have done this and will these be enough to get me into being creative or will i need more. have you been hireing people with this I'm only 18 and can't come to Auckland to go to AUT

thanks heeps - Mikey

FCB eats McCanns

Just in from Ed at Fastline:

McCann WorldGroup NZ is to be folded into FCB. (Both belong to the Interpublic Group.)

McCann MD Glenda Wynyard will not to be making the transition, and will leave to form her own media independent (with substantial backing).

Executives at both agencies could not be contacted today, including Wynyard, her recently appointed GM John McCarthy, FCB CD James Mok (who’s been handling media inquiries while the agency seeks a new MD), and FCB GM Brian van den Hurk.

Mok, however, flatly denied the rumour when Fastline put it to him on Monday.

FCB will cherrypick the clients and staff it wants, who will move into the FCB building in Parnell. There will be redundancies.

This is no longer just a rumour. Fastline’s pieced together the story from a number of confidential sources.

More as it emerges.

LOSEBY BACK DOWN UNDER

"It's Football, but not as you know it" is just one of the things that
makes Richard Loseby smile, particularly given the Socceroos' recent
passport to the World Cup in Germany.

Having successfully re-launched the round ball game into Australia, amongst other things, the former CD of Lowe Hunt, Sydney has had a fine time of things. Four months as acting CD of Lowe Asia has seen him working with ECD Paul Grubb, one of London's finest creatives and co-founder of Duckworth Finn Grubb Waters,
launching several major products into the region.

However, despite the fact the offer was there to make it a permanent move, the lure of New Zealand sees him back there once more. Says Loseby: "It might be the fishing, it might be the sailing on Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, but it's also a fact
that the NZ market is seeing one of the most exciting periods in its
history. Big clients are moving, mergers are taking place, all of which
makes for an interesting time."

Having said that, Sydney is still another important home for the itinerant senior creative and in the world of freelance he says, who cares where you live, "if the big idea gets over 100,000 people to watch 'soccer' - aka football on both sides
of a rugby-mad Tasman in the space of one weekend, then what does it
matter?"

He can be reached in Australia on 0407 890 620 and in NZ on 021 514077,
or at loseby@xtra.co.nz

Where did they get that guy for YG?

Ritchie Kotzen from Poison, Winger, & Mr. Big supposedly MC'd the YG Awards
show on Friday Night in Sydney. We can't figure out if it was really him or
not. Does anyone know? We just goggled him and got this:
http://www.richiekotzen.com. It looks like him... And he is apparently on
tour here now. So it could have been. What's the story? We tried to talk to
him afterwards but he just kept pointing at us and telling us to "be
somebody".

QUESTION: In my younger years when I was stuck for an idea I'd occasionally
nip off to the toilet for a bit of the ol' hand shandy. Now I'm in my mid 30's
ideas don't seem to be as forthcoming. I tell everyone I always drink more
than 8 glasses a day to hide the fact that I'm really throttling the turkey every
few hours. Anyway, my question is - Speaking of crap awards, anyone
remember the 5 hour AXIS ceremony at the Civic where you couldn't drink?

Please rate in order of prestige.

Facility Lunches

Why is it that at one particular facility, we very important clients
get to graze on catered lunches while all the poor button pushing
serfs get is... well actually, I'm not sure what it was today - some
iceberg lettuce and chunky petfood between two curly pieces of bread
by the looks of what's left on the plate. Is it really that much of a
hit on the bottom line to provide one extrra serving for the editors.

tree, an olive, neither of the east ( neither it gets sun-rays
only in the morning) nor of the west ( nor it gets sun-rays only
in the afternoon, but it is exposed to the sun all day long), whose
oil would almost glow forth (of itself), though no fire touched it.

Christmas Party Legends

The time for agency Christmas parties, where good cheer and herpes are spread throughout the company, is drawing near.

In the interests of improving the content of this site, does anyone have any classic/funny/painfully embarassing stories to share from parties of the past?

Tauranga creative agency outperforms the competition to secure national rebrand

Tauranga agency Braincell Creative is turning a few heads in the competitive creative and design scene. Mixing it nationally with the ‘big boys’ in this notoriously cut-throat industry, they’re proving the old adage - good things come in small parcels.

Braincell’s Tauranga creative team swept aside the competition to secure the plum Post Haste Couriers national rebrand contract. Comprising only five creative staff, the agency won the contract last December and revealed it via a carefully-planned teaser campaign this week.

Ernie's off

After just a few weeks in the Editor's chair,Ernie has resigned. " You're all nasty cunts", he said. " It's not like this back home. People are much friendlier, even if they do carry sidearms, some of them." Ernie, a former web designer from Texas was a appointed editor of nzcreative circle after 'accidently' spamming the blog with his portfolio last month. The publishers will conduct another exhaustive international search for some sucker to replace Ernie.

Conspiracy Theory

Is it true that certain headhunters ( mainly Australian) have an arrangement
with certain big NZ CDs not to approach their creatives...

How hard is it to get a job in another city, while still working at one's present job?

Just wondering – if looking for work overseas (for instance, Australia), do people think it’s too much of an arse for employers/recruiters to bother with applicants from NZ?  And if so, is it essential to quit, move to the city of choice, THEN start looking for work?

Cheers.

Droga to head 2006 Cannes Juries

Australia's David Droga, former worldwide creative director of Publicis, is
to head the film and press juries at next year's Cannes Lions festival.

Droga is currently based in New York, working on the launch of the
consultancy he set up with backing of Publicis Groupe, after he quit as
worldwide chief creative officer in August this year.

He has experienced incredible success at Cannes, a haul of 45 Lions and two
Grands Prix during a glittering career, first at the legendary OMON in
Sydney, where he spent nearly a decade, followed by three years as ECD at
Saatchi & Saatchi Asia (based in Singapore) followed by three years as ECD
of Saatchi's London, then two years as worldwide CD at Publicis.

He moved to New York in 2003 to take up the top creative role at Publicis,
but announced he was leaving the agency earlier this year to develop a new
kind of business. Called Drogafive, Droga describes it as a "brand ideas and
entertainment laboratory". It will open early next year with bases in New
York and Los Angeles.

Australia's Terry Savage, executive chairman of the Cannes Lions festival,
said: "David is one of the most talented, respected and awarded creative
stars today, receiving countless personal accolades along the way. Having
made his mark in Australia, Asia, Europe and now in the US, his
international outlook makes him the ideal jury president for Cannes."

Droga said: "I am extremely flattered to be the jury president. Cannes has
always been very good to me and I hope to reciprocate as much as possible."

Big Ad Night for Saatchi and George Patts

It was a golden night for George Patterson Partners, Melbourne (now George Patterson Y&R) as their Carlton Draught ŒBig Ad¹ - the most talked about spot of the year - snared two very rare Gold Pencils plus four Silvers and a Bronze at the 27th AWARD Awards, held last night in Sydney.

Another highlight of the night was the inaugural presentation of Agency of the Year - awarded to current Campaign Brief Agency of the Year Saatchi & Saatchi, Sydney for the best overall performance at AWARD. Including Craft, the agency¹s haul included one Silver and 14 Bronze Pencils, split betweenToyota, Olympus and Fox Sports.

Saatchi & Saatchi also won Network of the Year, beating second placed Publicis Mojo and third placed BBDO, while Foster¹s was deservedly awarded Client of the Year.

But Saatchi¹s and Patts weren¹t the only ones to have a great night out. A clutch of agencies from the three key regions - Australia, New Zealand and Asia - made more than one short walk and a handshake: including Colenso BBDO Auckland, Saatchi & Saatchi New Zealand, Publicis Mojo Auckland, Publicis Mojo Sydney, MTC Auckland, BMF Sydney, Arnold Worldwide Sydney and Ogilvy & Mather, Singapore.

Saatchi & Saatchi New Zealand won a Silver and six Bronze Pencils, mostly online/interactive work for NZ Army; Publicis Mojo Auckland won two Silvers and seven Bronze, mostly for the Burger Rings print campaign; MTC Auckland won two Silvers and six Bronze, all for L&P; Colenso BBDO Auckland won seven
Bronze Pencils, mostly for Monaco; and Publicis Mojo Sydney won two Silvers
and four Bronze.

More Asian agencies supported AWARD this year, and the effort proved fruitful: Euro RSCG Flagship, Bangkok won the only other Gold Pencil awarded on the night, for their outdoor campaign for 11 News 1 Channel. The agency also won a Silver. O&M Singapore won an impressive four Silvers and three Bronze; Leo Burnett Malaysia won two Silvers and three Bronze; Naga DDB
Malaysia won two Bronze; Batey Red Cell Singapore won a Silver; Leo Burnett
Singapore won two Bronze; TBWA Tokyo won two Bronze; and Saatchi¹s Singapore
won a Bronze.

This year the jury system for print and tv included three judges from New Zealand, three from Asia and three from Australia. This approach was deemed by the committee to be the fairest way of recognising the increasingly regional nature of the industry and of drawing from the widest pool of judging talent possible, whilst avoiding criticism of bias or favour.

AWARD co-chairman Darryn Devlin says the inaugural AWARD Clientof the Year award was long overdue: ³This is for the standout client amongst all those
whose work has been selected. We think it is absolutely necessary to acknowledge those clients who not only believe in the link between creativity and business success, but who have backed that up by investing in their brands. All great work is a result of partnership between clients and agencies with a common goal, so when we recognise and reward the best work of the year, we should also recognise those clients who have helped make it happen.

³This year, we have a client that has produced consistently good work over recent years, but this year has delivered a truly outstanding idea. And for that, we should all be thankful.²

I might have missed it all but so far I haven't seen too
many amazing things come out of the big agencies since Axis.
A few exceptions being the LTSA height ad out of Clems and
the International Film Festival campaign out of Saatchis.
Have I had my head in the sand and missed a lot of great
advertising or has the second half of '05 been a write off
for NZ agencies?

Ad News #1

According to an unofficial press release from Saatchis, a
senior creative's black tapered jeans have split. After
years of use, and dating back to when John McCabe was CD,
the tight black fashion statement was a common sight inside
Saatchi's den. Rumoured to be painted on, the sleek style of
tight denim against the thighs and buttocks of the un-named
creative made an aweseome site. But like all good creative
partnerships, the jeans and the creative have decided to
part on friendly terms.

Creative nature v nurture: where are the facts?

Dear Ernie,

Where does creativity come from?

Is it a nature thing? (some sort of idea-secreting gland you need to
exercise, or an on-board pre-existing instinct like my urge to have sex
with weather presenters)

Or is it a nurture thing? (like wearing odd eyewear, talking like it's
South London, or maybe hanging around Ponsonby restaurants with an
angry head full of Pinot)

I hope you can lead the way on this important matter.

Yours sincerely,

Dull from Ditchwater.
